What Is Somatic Relationship Coaching?

Updated: 7 days ago

Exploring what happens between two people beyond words + conscious intention
We can know what we want from a relationship and still find ourselves responding in ways that take us further from it.
We long for closeness, yet withdraw when our partner approaches.
We want to communicate openly, yet become defensive or fall silent.
We might recognise a familiar pattern, understand where it comes from and genuinely wish to change it — only to find ourselves repeating it the next time something touches a nerve.
Somatic relationship coaching explores what happens in the space between what we consciously intend and how we actually respond
WHAT DOES SOMATIC MEAN?
Somatic refers to the body as we experience it from within.
Our relationships are not experienced through thoughts and words alone.
They are also felt through sensation, movement, breath, tension, impulses and subtle shifts in how we respond to another person.
Consider a conversation with your partner.
A particular comment might bring tightness to your chest, a change in breathing or an impulse to explain yourself. Perhaps you lean forward, turn away or become unusually quiet.
These responses may happen before you've consciously registered what you're feeling.
Somatic awareness invites us to notice them,
without assuming we already know what they mean.
HOW DOES SOMATIC RELATIONSHIP COACHING WORK?
Rather than only discussing what happened in a relationship, somatic coaching brings attention to what is happening as two people meet one another.
A familiar disagreement, for example, might become an opportunity to notice the moment curiosity turns into defensiveness, or the point at which one partner begins to retreat while the other reaches harder for connection.
Through guided conversation, embodied awareness, movement and experiential exercises, couples can explore these moments together.
The intention is not to eliminate uncomfortable feelings or train the body to respond in a particular way, but to become more familiar with the patterns shaping our interactions, including the ones we don't yet recognise.
When something previously automatic becomes perceptible, we may discover possibilities beyond our familiar reactions.
THE SHADOW SOMATICS™ APPROACH
At SNATCH, this exploration is guided by Shadow Somatics™, a body-based relational methodology developed by Danni Lovefox.
The approach brings curiosity to the less visible movements shaping connection: how we experience ourselves through the body, how we protect what matters to us, what happens in contact with another person and where greater choice might become available.
It is not a fixed sequence or a programme for achieving the perfect relationship.
Sometimes the exploration involves conflict, distance or the wish to repair something painful.
At other times, it begins with two people who already share a loving relationship and are curious about greater intimacy, freedom, play or depth.
The work is not only about changing what isn't working.
It is also about discovering what else might be possible
A relationship is a living encounter between two people who are continually changing.
Somatic relationship coaching offers a way to meet that experience with greater awareness, curiosity and choice.
